sippy cup warning...

Ahlyssa woke up this morning with a rash. She has had it in the past and I took her to see the doctor. Well they told me it was a viral rash and it starts with a fever and then the rash comes then goes away after 5-7 days. Well problem was she didn't have a fever AND doesn't have one now. Well I was doing the dishes and her sippy cup lid fell immediately out of the dishwasher and fell upside down so I could see the inside of the lid and I saw the lid completely full of mold. I was so disgusted and just wanted all moms, babysitters, grandmas, anyone to check their sippy cups. (My sister recently just had the same problem but with a different brand of sippy.) I don't know if the rash has something to do with the mold, although I looked it up and a skin rash can be a result of mold. You better believe I will be calling the doctor first thing in the morning! I don't know if I want Ahlyssa to use sippys now...what else am I supposed to give her?
(the lid full of mold)

(Avent brand sippy--kind of wonder if the bottles have the same problem?)

Gross! Thanks for the heads up! We have not had a mold problem with our Avent bottles, but we don't use the dishwasher for them, we hand scrub them. We use a Playtex "Baby Einstein" sippy for Miles and it's pretty easy to clean. I recommend it :-)

Yikes! I have the Avent bottles and don't have a problem with mold. As far as sippies go we use the gerber ones and have never had a problem. The stopper that goes in the lid comes off really easy for cleaning.

Chaela uses a really cheap Nuby one. I'd noticed the stopper getting dirty, so I cleaned it out with a toothpick. But they only cost about $1.75. Maybe it's time for a new one... Oh, and before she started the cheap hard-top Nuby we got the more expensive ($4 or so) soft silicon lids. They never, ever had that problem, but we had to stop using them because Chaela chewed through the lids.

We always take them apart - nipples off and everything because of that problem. You can always clean them with either bleach (just soak them - then wash them in the dishwasher) or you can use baking soda - it gets it really clean. I use the disposable ones - they leak, but a lot easier to tell if there is mold on them.

I have learned quickly which sippies are the easiest to clean. Those Advent ones you do have to take completely apart to clean them. Some Sippies will get like that even if you do take them apart though. I finally designated certain sippies for just water and certain ones for milk or juice and I became super careful about how I cleaned them. I'm so glad you found out what caused her rash! Sometimes we have to do our own research even if the Dr. is convinced it's something else!
