Ok, I am not a big Dora fan quite yet (hoping she goes away before Ahlyssa is old enough to know who she is) and I don't know why I really care about this enough to blog about...but why on earth are they contemplating making Dora "grow up" and become a "city girl". Someone stated that she is going to become like Barbie and be obsessed with boys and sexualized.
I am totally appalled by this. Maybe its because I am now raising a child of my own and this is pointing right into my face the things these kids will have to deal with when they are older. Dora was once this cute brown eyed little girl that taught children Spanish, colors, numbers, memory, direction, and all sorts of things. Now they want to display a "grown up" Dora who now has long flowing hair, a short skirt, and long legs. Let's teach very young girls and throw in their faces sexuality. There's enough of that with magazine ads, movies, and adult television. We don't need producers of Nickelodeon or the Dora show starting this at such a young age. I think I don't quiet understand because they aren't changing Bob the Builder's look dirty ripped jeans, an Abercrombie hoodie, Nike shox, with a Ty Pennington tool belt to make him look more modernized. This just makes me a bit perturbed. The media needs to leave children alone and quit brainwashing them! With this said...I am going to bed.

ha...this is hilarious...because a real latina say from mexico, that had more of an indigenous heritage would be short and squatty. maybe not the most attractive woman to americanized girls. so not only would they sexualize her but "white wash" her...just a thought...
I hadn't heard that, and I totally agree with you! I just figure that if I don't turn it on, Chaela won't know that it's there. Same thing with all of those Disney Channel shows. If she's going to watch TV (which I know I should limit quite a bit more than I do with her now) I'd rather have her watching the cartoons that are on PBS and things like that. I'll probably do what my mom did: movies. It's musicals and old Disney classics for my kids!
I haven't heard that either, but if it's true it's really disappointing. I actually like Dora as a children's show because it follows some of the basic tenants of "quality" kids' programming and features a latina (and there aren't too many latino characters featured prominently in TV today). I am really, really sick of these over-sexualized "role models" for little girls though (and IMO Bratz dolls are the worst, but that is another topic entirely)!
I use to detest Dora....until Ava watched it one day and LOVED it....it actually taught her a lot and she started participating in their little quiz games from an early age.....not my favorite character though I would agree with you. I hate character clothing and try to stay clear of those if I can. Now Sponge Bob...oh I can't take that show. I have trained my girls to say "No Bob!" as soon as it comes on & we turn the channel, haha. I limit hyper cartoon shows like Dora & Disney shows to a couple times a week. Our favorites by far are Little Bear, Max & Ruby and sometimes Clifford ....nice calm shows that teach little lessons and emphasize on manners.
Oh and about Dora growing up in a show that is so strange! What an awful idea!!
